Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi Launches Free Medical Camp, Bringing Vital Healthcare to Parklands Residents
Westlands MP Hon. Tim Wanyonyi officially inaugurated a free medical camp this morning at the Hindu Council of Kenya (HCK) offices on Kusi Lane, 3rd Parklands. The camp, held on Sunday, September 15, 2024, in conjunction with Bodykraft Medical Center, saw more than 1,000 patients receive various health services provided by a team of medical specialists.
In his remarks during the inauguration, Hon. Tim Wanyonyi commended the Hindu Council of Kenya for their continued partnership and dedication to serving the community. “Hindu Council has been our partner in many things.
During COVID, they helped us with food for the community, among other things. Westlands and other parts of Parklands will benefit from this program,” said the MP.
He stressed the importance of health as the foundation of everything: “Without health, you cannot do anything. If you are healthy, thank God and do not take it for granted. When we have anyone advancing such programs, we support it.”
Hon. Wanyonyi also acknowledged the challenges the government faces in achieving Universal Health Care (UHC) and emphasized the importance of partnerships in overcoming these obstacles.
“Accessing medical facilities is a challenge to our people. Many times, the cost of healthcare is usually very expensive. We thank the Hindu Council for your many programs. We will sit and understand the programs you have, including the mobile clinic and feeding program for schools, and see how we can fit in,” he added.
The MP’s office has taken steps to assist residents by paying National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) premiums for elderly citizens in Westlands, but he emphasized the need for continued efforts to make healthcare more affordable and accessible.
Sujatha Kotamraju, Chairlady of the Hindu Council of Kenya, expressed gratitude for Hon. Wanyonyi’s support, noting that the medical camp is part of their ongoing efforts to promote community health.
“Health is wealth, true or false?” she asked the crowd, emphasizing the significance of good health. She also shared that HCK organizes monthly medical camps, providing services from specialists, including cardiologists, dermatologists, and urologists, alongside free medication after consultation.
Ms. Kotamraju proudly announced the launch of HCK’s mobile medical van, which will travel to different locations on a weekly basis to bring healthcare services to communities in need. “We will liaise with our MP to know where to take the van to serve people,” she stated, highlighting HCK’s commitment to working closely with Hon. Wanyonyi to address healthcare challenges in the community.
She also praised Hon. Wanyonyi’s close relationship with the Indian community, sharing that his quick response to their invitation exemplifies his dedication to public service. “Anytime you come here, you motivate us and encourage us,” Ms. Kotamraju said, thanking the MP for his continued support.
One of the beneficiaries of the camp, Parklands resident Janet Ombayo, expressed her appreciation for the Hindu Council’s ongoing assistance. “Hindu Council is resourceful, and we are thankful. They help us with bursaries to keep our children in school and provide food for slum residents in Highridge,” she said.
Ms. Ombayo also commended Hon. Tim Wanyonyi for his efforts in Westlands and voiced her support for his political future:
“As residents of Parklands, we love you, Hon. Tim. We want to mobilize a lot of votes to propel you to the governorship in 2027.”
She also urged the MP to lobby for youth to get identification cards (IDs) and job opportunities, ensuring they can participate in the next elections and secure employment.
The free medical camp provided a wide range of essential health services, including blood sugar testing, blood pressure monitoring, and body mass index (BMI) assessments. Patients also had access to general practitioner consultations.
In addition to the general services, specialists were available in the afternoon, offering consultations in areas such as:Gastroenterology & Laparoscopic surgery, Urology,Male wellness, Bone & joint health, Physiotherapy, Obstetrics & gynecology and Diabetology.
